Client-Side Differential PDF Inspection
The PDF Compare tool performs deterministic differential analysis between two versions of a PDF document directly within your web browser. Built on a local client-side text extraction and comparison engine, it parses page text streams, computes word-level longest common subsequences (LCS), and categorizes identical, modified, added, and removed pages without uploading files to any server.
When reviewing revised contracts, engineering manuals, or financial statements, subtle edits in phrasing or numeric clauses are easy to overlook. The workspace aligns pages sequentially, highlights inserted words in green, and marks deleted tokens with red strikethrough formatting in the Visual Diff view. Users can switch to the Side-by-Side view to read Baseline (Doc A) and Comparison (Doc B) page text streams in parallel columns.
Beyond page text, the engine inspects document catalog properties including page counts, byte sizes, PDF specification versions, document titles, authors, and producer tags. To keep browser memory responsive on dense documents, word-level LCS matrices evaluate up to 2,000 word tokens per page and compile findings into a copyable and downloadable Markdown audit report.
Core Tool Capabilities
- Word-Level Longest Common Subsequence Diffing: Tokenizes extracted page text on whitespace boundaries and computes word-level Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) matrices up to 2,000 words per page. Insertions and deletions are rendered inline with distinct color-coded highlights and strikethrough markers.
- Visual Diff, Side-by-Side, and Audit Markdown Views: Toggle between three inspection modes in the visual studio toolbar depending on your review workflow. Inspect inline token highlights in Visual Diff, read parallel page streams in Side-by-Side mode, or examine the structured text summary in Audit Markdown mode.
- Page-by-Page Status & Similarity Scoring: Navigate across document pages with Previous and Next controls while monitoring per-page word addition and deletion counters. The engine calculates a similarity ratio for every page by dividing matching word tokens by the maximum word count of the compared page pair.
- Structural Catalog & Metadata Auditing: Compares macro document properties across both files, including total page count, file byte size, PDF header version, Document Title, Author, and Producer strings. Any mismatch between Baseline (Doc A) and Target (Doc B) is flagged in the structural summary.
- Markdown Audit Report Export: Generates a timestamped Markdown (.md) comparison report summarizing overall similarity percentage, page status counts, structural metadata comparisons, and per-page word diff metrics. Copy the report directly to your clipboard or download it as a standalone file.
- Local In-Browser Execution: Performs all PDF parsing, text stream extraction, LCS matrix evaluation, and Markdown report generation inside local browser session memory. Confidential agreements and draft filings remain on your device with no network transmission.
Local Browser Privacy
Your files are processed locally on your device. Files are not uploaded, transmitted, or stored on remote servers.
Once the page has loaded, you can disconnect your network connection and continue using this tool offline.
Target Use Cases
- • Legal Contract & Agreement Revisions
- • Financial Statements & Audit Verification
- • Engineering & Technical Specification Updates
- • Academic & Editorial Manuscript Proofing
Technical Specifications & Platform Limits
Accepts two unencrypted PDF documents containing selectable text streams.
Evaluates whitespace-delimited word tokens per page and catalog metadata.
Three interactive viewing modes in the workspace inspection toolbar.
Structured audit report with per-page word counts and similarity scores.
No document bytes or extracted text streams leave your browser.
Step-by-Step Workflow
Load Baseline and Comparison PDFs
Drag and drop two PDF files into the dropzone at once, or select Document A (Baseline) and Document B (Comparison) sequentially. You can also click Load Sample Pair to test the differential workspace immediately.
Run Differential Analysis
Click the Run Comparison button in the action banner to start local text stream extraction and metadata inspection. The engine validates both PDF buffers, reads catalog headers, and computes word-level diffs across all pages.
Inspect Visual Diff and Side-by-Side Streams
Use the Page Navigator buttons to step through each page and check the inline +added and -deleted word badges. Switch between Visual Diff for token-level highlights and Side-by-Side mode to compare Baseline and Comparison text columns.
Copy or Download the Markdown Audit Report
Switch to the Audit Markdown tab to review the complete structural and page-by-page breakdown, then click Copy Report to copy the text. Click Download Report (.md) in the top banner to save the audit file to your device.
Practical Real-World Use Cases
Legal Contract & Agreement Revisions
Legal counsel and paralegals compare redlined vendor agreements against baseline contract templates to verify modified clauses. Word-level insertion and deletion markers expose subtle changes in indemnification wording or payment schedules before signing.
Financial Statements & Audit Verification
Financial analysts and auditors inspect sequential drafts of quarterly reports and tax disclosures to track revised figures. The page-by-page similarity score and word counters immediately pinpoint which pages contain updated footnotes or numbers.
Engineering & Technical Specification Updates
Product engineers and technical writers compare updated SOP manuals and architectural specifications against prior releases. Exporting the Markdown audit report provides a clear revision log for engineering change orders and pull requests.
Academic & Editorial Manuscript Proofing
Editors and researchers verify copy-editing revisions across manuscript drafts prior to publication. Side-by-side text stream alignment confirms that peer-review corrections were applied without unintentionally dropping paragraphs.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Are my PDF documents uploaded to an external server during comparison?
- No. All PDF validation, text stream extraction, word-level LCS computation, and Markdown report generation run locally inside your browser session. Your documents never leave your device.
- How is the overall similarity percentage calculated?
- For each page pair, the engine divides the count of matching LCS word tokens by the larger word count of the two pages (evaluating up to 2,000 words per page). The overall document similarity score is the rounded average of these per-page similarity ratios across the total page count.
- What happens if one PDF has more pages than the other?
- The engine compares corresponding page numbers sequentially up to the maximum page count of the longer document. Pages that exist only in Document B are marked as Added with 0% similarity, while pages present only in Document A are marked as Removed.
- Can this tool compare scanned PDFs that only contain images?
- No. PDF Compare extracts digital text streams embedded in the PDF page content dictionary. If a page contains only scanned bitmap images without an underlying text layer, the viewer displays a notice that no readable text tokens were extracted on that page.
- Does the comparison tool work offline?
- Yes. Once the tool page and its client-side PDF worker scripts have loaded in your web browser, you can compare documents and export Markdown reports offline without an active internet connection.
