Add Automated Vector Page Numbers to PDF Documents
The PDF Page Numbers tool stamps vector page numbers into the headers or footers of PDF documents directly within your web browser. You can choose from six alignment positions, four numbering formats, custom prefix labels, font sizes, edge margins, text color swatches, and first-page cover exclusions without uploading files to external servers.
Under the hood, the engine embeds a standard ISO 32000-1 Type 1 Helvetica vector font and calculates horizontal and vertical coordinates in PostScript points (72 points per inch) relative to each page's individual `MediaBox` dimensions. Because page numbers are appended as vector text drawing operations rather than rasterized page images, all existing text layers, embedded fonts, vector illustrations, and annotations remain intact.
Every configuration change triggers a 300 ms debounced re-compilation that updates the Live Numbered PDF Document Preview in real time. You can visually verify header or footer clearance across every page before downloading the finished `-numbered.pdf` document.
Core Tool Capabilities
- Six-Position Header & Footer Grid: Place page numbers at Top Left, Top Center, Top Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Center, or Bottom Right using the interactive 6-button position grid. Horizontal centering and right-aligned offsets are computed dynamically from the exact glyph width of each formatted string.
- Four Numbering Formats & Custom Prefixes: Select from four formatting styles: `Page 1, Page 2` (with an editable Custom Prefix Text input), `Page 1 of N` (displaying running total count), `Number Only (1, 2)`, or `Brackets [1], [2]`. Custom prefixes let you stamp labels such as `Exhibit Page 1` or `Folio 1` across your packet.
- Font Size, Edge Margin, & Color Swatches: Adjust typography scale from 6 pt to 36 pt (default 10 pt) and edge margin offset from 5 pt to 80 pt in 5 pt increments (default 20 pt). Choose from four curated text color swatches (Charcoal `#111827`, Gray `#4B5563`, Navy Blue `#1E3A8A`, or Deep Red `#991B1B`) to match your document styling.
- Start Number & Cover Page Exclusion: Enable the Skip First Page (Cover Page Exclusion) checkbox to omit numbering on page 1 so title covers remain clean. Use the Start Number input (1 to 9999) to offset sequence numbering when paginating multi-part volumes or appendices.
- Zero-Rasterization Vector Text Injection: Writes page numbers as standard Type 1 Helvetica vector text operators directly into each page's content stream. Existing vector graphics, searchable text, and high-resolution photos suffer 0% bitmap re-encoding or compression loss.
- 300 ms Live Document Preview: Recompiles and renders all document pages inside the Live Numbered PDF Document Preview 300 milliseconds after any slider or format adjustment. You can inspect exact margin spacing and typography placement across the entire document prior to export.

Step-by-Step Workflow
Select Your PDF Document
Drag and drop a PDF file up to 100 MB into the workspace dropzone, select a file from your device, or load the built-in sample document. The engine validates the PDF structure and compiles an initial preview with Bottom Center numbering.
Choose Position and Number Format
Click one of the six placement buttons (Top Left, Top Center, Top Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Center, or Bottom Right) in the Page Numbering Configuration panel. Select your preferred Number Format (`Page 1, Page 2`, `Page 1 of N`, `Number Only`, or `Brackets`) and edit the Custom Prefix Text if using prefix mode.
Adjust Typography, Margins, and Cover Rules
Drag the Font Size slider (6 pt to 36 pt) and Edge Margin slider (5 pt to 80 pt) to position the text clear of existing body content, and select a Text Color swatch. Set a custom Start Number or check Skip First Page (Cover Page Exclusion) if your document begins with a title cover.
Verify Live Preview and Download
Scroll through the Live Numbered PDF Document Preview to confirm that page numbers align cleanly on every page. Click Download Numbered PDF in the summary banner to save the finished `-numbered.pdf` file to your device.
Practical Real-World Use Cases
Legal Briefs, Motions, & Court Exhibits
Attorneys and paralegals stamp sequential `Page 1 of N` or custom-prefixed folio numbers onto compiled legal filings and discovery packets. Vector Helvetica text injection keeps existing searchable text layers intact for electronic court filing systems.
Corporate Reports & Client Proposals
Business analysts and consultants paginate annual reports and pitch decks while checking Skip First Page (Cover Page Exclusion) to keep full-bleed cover artwork unnumbered. Selecting Charcoal or Navy Blue color swatches coordinates footer typography with corporate brand palettes.
Academic Theses & Research Manuscripts
Graduate students and researchers add consistent Top Right or Bottom Center page numbers to merged manuscript chapters and laboratory appendices. Adjusting the Edge Margin slider in PostScript points ensures page numbers satisfy university binding margin rules.
Multi-Volume Manuals & Training Guides
Technical writers configure the Start Number input to continue sequential pagination across separate PDF volumes and printed handbooks. Real-time multi-page previewing prevents header or footer collisions with existing diagrams and tables.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Will adding page numbers alter or rasterize my existing PDF text and graphics?
- No. Page numbers are appended as vector text drawing operations using the standard Type 1 Helvetica font without re-encoding or rasterizing existing page content. All original selectable text, embedded fonts, and vector graphics remain untouched.
- How do Skip First Page and Start Number work together?
- Checking Skip First Page (Cover Page Exclusion) omits drawing a page number on page 1 while keeping the underlying sequential page count intact. With Start Number set to 1, page 1 is left blank and page 2 is numbered 2, and in `Page 1 of N` mode the displayed total count equals the document page count plus your Start Number minus 1.
- How are page numbers positioned if my PDF has mixed page sizes or orientations?
- The engine reads the exact width and height of each individual page and measures the width of that page's formatted number string at the chosen font size. Top, bottom, left, center, and right coordinates are calculated per page, so A4, US Letter, and landscape pages in the same PDF are each numbered accurately relative to their own edges.
- Can I add page numbers to a password-protected or encrypted PDF?
- No. Encrypted or password-protected PDF files are rejected during pre-flight validation because their internal page trees are locked against modification. Unlock the document first using the PDF Unlocker tool, and then load the decrypted PDF here to add page numbers.
- Are my PDF documents uploaded to any external server?
- No. All PDF validation, vector font embedding, live preview rendering, and file compilation run locally in your web browser within a 100 MB per-file memory limit. Your documents never leave your device.
