Client-Side Permanent PDF Redaction and Content Sanitization
Sharing legal filings, medical records, or financial statements often requires permanently removing confidential text, signatures, account numbers, and personally identifiable information (PII) before distribution. PDF Redaction Tool obscures sensitive regions in PDF documents directly inside your web browser, allowing you to draw rectangular redaction boxes across any page using mouse or touch controls, select visual overlay styles, and export a sanitized PDF without uploading files to external servers.
Standard annotation rectangles merely cover text visually while leaving underlying character streams intact and selectable. To prevent reverse text extraction, this engine renders each page that contains redaction boxes onto an HTML5 2D canvas at 2x scale (144 DPI), paints the selected redaction rectangles directly into the pixel buffer, and embeds the resulting flattened PNG image into the output PDF. Pages without redaction boxes are copied directly as original vector pages.
The workspace provides three visual redaction presets: solid Blackout, black boxes stamped with centered white [REDACTED] text, and clean Whiteout overlays. You can also leave the Sanitize Document Metadata option enabled to clear hidden Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords properties before saving your file.

- Three Redaction Overlay Styles: Switch between solid Blackout bars (#000000), black boxes with auto-scaled bold white [REDACTED] labels, or solid Whiteout boxes (#FFFFFF) before drawing each region.
- Selective Unredacted Page Preservation: Copies pages that have zero redaction boxes directly from the source document without rasterization, preserving original vector text searchability and compact byte size on untouched pages.
- Document Metadata Sanitization: Includes an enabled-by-default Sanitize Document Metadata checkbox that clears Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords fields and resets creation and modification timestamps.
- Multi-Page Navigation and Queue Tracking: Step through multi-page documents using Previous Page and Next Page controls while tracking the total count of queued redaction boxes across the entire file.

Your files are processed locally on your device. Files are not uploaded, transmitted, or stored on remote servers.

Step-by-Step Workflow
Select PDF Document
Drag and drop a PDF file (up to 100 MB) into the workspace dropzone or click Choose PDF File to load it into local browser memory.
Choose Redaction Style and Navigate
Select Blackout, [REDACTED], or Whiteout in the Style toolbar, and use the Previous Page and Next Page buttons to locate pages containing sensitive content.
Draw Redaction Boxes
Click and drag across text, signatures, or images on the page canvas to queue redaction boxes. Hover over any box and click the remove button, or click Clear Page, to adjust your selections.
Sanitize and Download
Verify the Sanitize Document Metadata checkbox, click Apply Redactions & Sanitize, and click Download Sanitized PDF to save the output file with a -sanitized.pdf suffix.

- No. Every page that contains at least one redaction box is rasterized onto an HTML5 2D canvas where the redaction rectangles overwrite the pixel data directly, and the page is re-embedded as a flat PNG image. No selectable text, font streams, or hidden vector paths remain on redacted pages.
- Are my PDF documents uploaded to a remote server for redaction?
- No. All page rendering, coordinate selection, canvas pixel burn-in, and PDF reconstruction run locally inside your browser session memory. No document bytes are transmitted over the network.
- What happens to selectable text on pages that are redacted versus pages that are not?
- Pages that contain one or more redaction boxes are converted into flat 144 DPI raster images to guarantee complete removal of underlying text streams on those pages. Pages without any redaction boxes are copied directly as original vector pages and retain selectable text.
- Does the tool remove hidden document properties?
- Yes. When the Sanitize Document Metadata (Author, Producer, Creation Dates) checkbox is left enabled, the tool clears the Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords fields and resets the document creation and modification dates.
- Can I remove a single redaction box without clearing the entire document?
- Yes. Hover over any redaction box on the active page preview and click the red remove button in its top-right corner to delete that specific box, or click Clear Page to remove all boxes on the current page.
