Extract Text from PDF
Extract readable plain text content and structured streams from PDF documents page-by-page directly in your browser with zero server uploads.
Selecting a file allows the browser to read it locally. Files are processed locally in your browser when using supported tools. No upload required for supported workflows.

Client-Side PDF Plain Text Stream Extraction and Page Inspection
Copying passages, citations, or raw text out of multi-page PDF reports by hand often introduces broken line wraps and misses pages that contain flat scanned images. PDF to Text extracts digital text streams from PDF documents page-by-page directly inside your web browser without uploading files to external servers.
When a file is selected, the validator checks the `%PDF-` header, verifies that the document is not password-encrypted, and enforces a 100 MB client-side memory limit. The extraction engine then reads each page's positioned text items, starts a new line whenever the vertical baseline coordinate shifts by more than `5` points (`|currentY - lastY| > 5`) or an end-of-line marker is reached, and normalizes excess whitespace by collapsing three or more consecutive blank lines into a clean paragraph break.
Inside the `Extracted Plain Text Stream` viewer, you can filter lines in real time using `Search in Text`, isolate individual pages with the `Target Page View` selector (which automatically synchronizes the `Document Inspection Live Preview` below), and inspect word, character, and scanned-page counts. Clicking `Copy Text` or `Download .txt` exports either the entire document (`<filename>-text.txt`) or the currently selected page (`<filename>-page-<N>.txt`).
Core Tool Capabilities
- Vertical Delta Line and Paragraph Reconstruction: Evaluates the vertical transformation matrix coordinate (`Y`) of every glyph run on each page. Runs within `5` vertical points are joined onto the same horizontal line, while vertical shifts exceeding `5` points trigger a line break and redundant blank lines are compressed to preserve natural paragraph spacing.
- Automatic Scanned-Page Detection and Alerts: Flags any page containing fewer than `3` extracted words and fewer than `3` text items as a likely raster scan. When image-only pages are detected, the workspace displays a `Scanned Pages Detected` warning banner and inserts a clear placeholder notice in the full-document text stream indicating that OCR is required.
- Real-Time Keyword Line Filtering: Type any keyword or phrase into the `Search in Text` input (`Filter text lines`) to filter the monospaced viewer down to matching lines in real time. A live badge inside the search bar reports the exact number of matching lines (`<N> match` or `matches`).
- Target Page View and Synchronized PDF Preview: Use the `Target Page View` dropdown to switch between `All Pages (<N> pages)` and any individual `Page <N> (<words> words, <chars> chars)`. Selecting a specific page isolates its text stream in the viewer and jumps the `Document Inspection Live Preview` card to that exact page.
- Full-Document or Single-Page UTF-8 Export: Click `Copy Text` to copy the active view to your system clipboard, or click `Download .txt` to save a UTF-8 plain text file. Exporting in `All Pages` view saves `<filename>-text.txt` with page divider headers, while exporting a filtered single page saves `<filename>-page-<N>.txt`.
- Live Word, Character, and Page Metrics: Displays total extracted words, normalized Unicode character counts, scanned-page totals, and file byte size across the `Extracted Plain Text Status` summary header and the bottom document inventory table.
Local Browser Privacy

Technical Specifications & Platform Limits
Validates %PDF- header and rejects password-protected files over 100 MB.
Exports <name>-text.txt for all pages or <name>-page-<N>.txt for one page.
Groups horizontal runs within 5 points and collapses 3+ blank lines.
Alerts when pages contain flat raster images without digital text streams.
All PDF text extraction, filtering, and .txt generation run locally.
Step-by-Step Workflow
Load a PDF Document
Drag and drop a PDF file (up to 100 MB) into the workspace dropzone, browse your device, or load the built-in sample PDF.
Review Extraction Metrics and Warnings
Inspect the `Extracted Plain Text Status` summary card for total words, character counts, and any `Scanned Pages Detected` notifications.
Filter by Keyword or Page Number
Enter a query in `Search in Text` to isolate matching lines, or choose a specific page in `Target Page View` while comparing against the `Document Inspection Live Preview`.
Copy Text or Download .txt
Click `Copy Text` to copy the displayed stream to your clipboard, or click `Download .txt` to save `<filename>-text.txt` (or `<filename>-page-<N>.txt`).
Practical Real-World Use Cases
Research Literature and Quote Extraction
Students, journalists, and academic researchers filtering multi-page PDF papers by keyword and exporting plain `.txt` files for citation managers and study notes.
LLM Prompt Context and Corpus Preparation
Developers and data analysts extracting clean UTF-8 plain text streams from technical specifications and public reports before feeding text into language model prompts.
Legal Clause and Contract Comparison
Paralegals and operations managers isolating individual contract pages via `Target Page View` and copying raw clause text into redlining or diff utilities.
Digital Text Layer Verification
Accessibility auditors and archivists checking whether a PDF contains selectable Unicode text streams or unindexed raster page scans that require OCR.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why does the tool show a Scanned Pages Detected warning on my PDF?
- When a page contains fewer than 3 words and fewer than 3 selectable text objects, the engine flags it as a likely scanned image page. Because this tool reads existing digital text streams rather than running optical character recognition on pixels, use the PDF OCR tool to extract text from scanned pages.
- How do Copy Text and Download .txt behave when a single page is selected?
- When `Target Page View` is set to `All Pages`, clicking `Copy Text` or `Download .txt` exports the complete document text (saved as `<filename>-text.txt`) with page header markers between pages. When a specific page number is selected in `Target Page View`, both actions export only that page's text (saved as `<filename>-page-<N>.txt`).
- Are my PDF documents or extracted text uploaded to a server?
- No. All file validation, text stream extraction, keyword filtering, and `.txt` file creation execute locally inside your browser memory with no network transmission.
- How does the extractor preserve line breaks and paragraph spacing?
- The engine tracks the vertical `Y` coordinate of each text item in the PDF content stream, inserting a line break whenever the vertical position changes by more than 5 points or an end-of-line flag is present, and collapsing three or more consecutive blank lines into a single blank line.
- What are the file size and encryption limits?
- The validator accepts unencrypted PDF files up to 100 MB. Password-protected PDFs are rejected during validation and can be unlocked first using the PDF Unlocker tool.
